Approximately 70% of all Thoroughbred races in North America are claiming races. They are essential for filling daily race cards.

The Built-in “For Sale” Sign: In a claiming race, every horse entered is officially for sale. If you enter your horse, you must be prepared to lose it.

The Bill of Sale is Immediate: Once the gates open, the horse is effectively sold. The money is transferred to the former owner’s account, and the horse is led away to a new barn immediately after the race.

Price Ranges: Depending on the track, claiming prices typically range from as low as $5,000 to as high as $100,000.

Hierarchy of Tiers: The industry is divided into four main tiers: Stakes (top tier), Allowance, Maiden, and Claiming (entry/base tier).

The Competitive Filter: The claiming system prevents high-quality “Stakes” horses from running against lower-level competition, as owners won’t risk losing a million-dollar horse for a $20,000 price tag.

Gender Rules: In racing, male horses are generally barred from “Filly & Mare” (female) races. However, females are allowed to “run against the boys” in open competition.

The Business and the “Racino” Effect

The Rise of the Racino: A “racino” is a racetrack combined with a casino. These venues have revolutionized the industry by using gambling revenue to subsidize racing.

Skyrocketing Purses: Thanks to casino revenue, purses at some racinos have increased by over 100% since the early 2000s.

The Mid-Atlantic Goldmine: The most lucrative claiming opportunities currently exist at racinos in Florida, Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Delaware, and Maryland.

Breaking Even Fast: In a racino environment, the purse structure is so high that an owner can sometimes reach their “break-even point” (recouping the purchase price) in just one race.

Purse Distribution: A standard purse is typically distributed among the top five finishers:

1st Place: 60%

2nd Place: 20%

3rd Place: 10%

4th Place: 5%

5th Place and lower: 1%

Minimum Earnings: At modern racinos, the minimum purse for a claiming race often starts at $15,000, while the top end can reach $100,000.

Industry Trends and Statistics (2025-2026)

The Foal (baby horses) Crop Decline: The industry is facing a steady contraction. The Jockey Club projected the 2025 foal crop at 17,300, with a further decline to 17,000 in 2026.

Wagering Trends: As of late 2025, overall wagering (handle) has seen a slight year-to-date decline of about 1.1% to 2.1%, reflecting broader economic pressures on gambling.

Fewer Race Days, Higher Stakes: While the number of races is down (dropping roughly 4.3% in 2025), the average available purse per race day has actually increased by 2.4% to 4.3%, meaning there is more money available per race.

Field Sizes: The average field size for U.S. races currently sits at approximately 7.4 to 7.9 runners, a metric trainers watch closely to gauge their chances of winning.

The Safety Milestone: There is good news for fans—in 2024, the rate of fatal injury reached its lowest point since reporting began, at 1.1 per 1,000 starts, with 99.89% of starts completed safely.

Ownership and Strategy

The “Maiden Claiming” Start: Horses that have never won a race often start in “Maiden Claiming” events, which serve as the entry point for many new owners.

Conditional Claims: Races are often restricted by a horse’s past performance (e.g., “Non-winners of two races life”).

The “Open” Claimer: Older, experienced horses often run in “Open” claiming races, where there are no restrictions other than the price tag.

The Jockey Club’s Role: Beyond being a registry, the Jockey Club invests heavily in the industry, having committed over $100 million since 2010 toward safety, aftercare, and promotion.

The Sustainability Crisis: Some analysts worry about the “racino” model; if casino revenues dip, many racetracks may struggle to maintain their current purse levels.

Growth Opportunities: For new syndicates like “The Stable,” the strategy is to buy horses in the claiming tier and “improve” them through better training or environment to move up into the Allowance tier.

The Ultimate Goal: The “Claim Game” is a marketplace of valuation. The most successful owners are those who can spot a horse running for a $20,000 tag that has the hidden potential to win at the $50,000 level.

Thanks for reading Horse Claiming! horse every morning—the Groom—knows more about the “Glass Statue” than anyone in the grandstand. A “Straight-Talk” owner treats the backstretch staff as the primary data source for their investment.

The Discipline of the Dirt

Racing is often marketed as a world of champagne and sun hats. The Track Kitchen reminds you that the “Big Day Out” is built on a foundation of manual labor and extreme discipline. The people eating breakfast at 5:00 AM have already been working for two hours. They work in sub-zero winters and blistering summers. They work seven days a week because the horse doesn’t know it’s Sunday.

This “Grit” is what makes the sport sustainable. As an owner, your “Active Participation” starts here. If you only show up for the race, you are a tourist. If you show up for the morning works, if you sit in the track kitchen and listen to the trainers debate “Surface Science” over bad coffee, you become an Insider.

The “Straight-Talk” Standard At HorseClaiming.com

We believe the track kitchen is where the “Transparency Manifesto” begins. It’s where you learn that there are no “secrets” in racing—only people who pay attention and people who don’t.

We embrace the Track Kitchen Ethos because it keeps us grounded. It reminds us that every “Business” decision we make and every “Strategy” we deploy is ultimately dependent on the skill and heart of the people on the backstretch. To win on the “Big Day Out,” you have to respect the 4:00 AM engine.

Conclusion: The Full Circle

Whether you are analyzing a “Deceleration Curve” or a “Tax Alpha,” never lose sight of the dirt. The track kitchen is where the “Straight-Talk” is loudest. It’s where the BS is filtered out and the reality of the athlete remains. If you want to be a successful owner, buy a pair of boots, get to the kitchen by dawn, and listen. The dirt will tell you everything you need to know.

Thanks for reading Horse Claiming! As the field thunders toward the wire, you see a horse “surging” from the back of the pack, appearing to find a hidden gear of extra speed that leaves the leaders standing still. In the stands, the announcer screams about a “blistering kick.”

But if you look at the Trakus data or the GMAX sensors, you’ll see the cold, physical truth: That “surging” horse isn’t actually speeding up. In 99% of cases, every single horse on the track is slowing down. The winner is simply the one decelerating the slowest.

Thanks for reading Horse Claiming! A Thoroughbred is a biological masterpiece of aerobic efficiency—until they hit the “redline.” For the first half of a race, a horse is breathing, circulating oxygen, and burning fuel sustainably. However, at a certain point (usually around the 3/8ths pole), the physical demand exceeds the oxygen supply. The horse goes anaerobic.

At this moment, they are running on “borrowed time”—a chemical process where muscles burn stored glycogen without oxygen, creating lactic acid as a byproduct. Think of it like a battery that has been unplugged from the charger. It can still provide massive power, but the voltage is dropping every second.

Unsplash

The “Kick” is a Flat Curve

When we talk about a horse having a “big kick,” we are actually describing their biological efficiency. A horse that appears to “explode” in the stretch is an athlete whose body is better at managing that anaerobic debt.

While the early leaders may have “hit the wall”—dropping from 38mph to 32mph in a matter of strides—the closer might only be dropping from 37mph to 35mph. To the naked eye, a horse going 35mph looks like a rocket compared to one going 32mph. This is the “Straight-Talk” secret: Winning isn’t about finding more speed; it’s about having the cardiovascular frame to resist the inevitable slow-down longer than the horse next to you.

Stride Length: The Efficiency Multiplier

Physics plays a second, equally important role: Stride Length. The average Thoroughbred covers about 20–21 feet per stride. An elite athlete like Secretariat or Flightline covered 24–25 feet.

Imagine two horses running at the same speed. Horse A has a 21-foot stride; Horse B has a 24-foot stride. Over the course of a 1-mile race, Horse A has to “jump” roughly 60 more times than Horse B to cover the same ground. Each of those jumps costs energy. By the time they hit the stretch, Horse B has a “fuller tank” simply because they were more efficient. This is why we obsess over biometrics and gait analysis at HorseClaiming.com. We aren’t just looking for fast horses; we are looking for “efficient jumpers” who can save their anaerobic fuel for the final 200 yards.

The Takeaway for the Owner

As an owner, when your trainer tells you a horse “didn’t fire,” don’t just look at the result. Look at the Late Pace Figures. Did the horse actually quit, or did the jockey use too much “battery” in the first half of the race? In the physics of the finish, the greatest weapon isn’t a whip—it’s a “flat” deceleration curve.

Thanks for reading Horse Claiming!
