How to Handicap Emerging Markets Like a Pro Horseplayer
Comparing the $20 Million Saudi Cup to the Stock Market: Betting on the Best Financial 'Sprints' from Brazil to Vietnam.
I once worked for a guy who later became a billionaire. He used to say “whatever you become, be the #1 person in that field, as niche/narrow as it is.”
My recent article tying the $20 million Saudi Cup to scouting for values in Emerging Market Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs) was my third published “crossover” article this year. Since I’ve already hit the “Pick 3” in that area, I guess I’ll stake my claim.
Being the foremost authority on analogizing the great game of thoroughbred racing to how Wall Street places their bets is a title I’ll gladly own. Even if I’m the only one who assigns it to me.
Enjoy this latest installment of my attempts to connect the 2 things I spend a lot of time on. Because I think part of “expanding the tent” of racehorse ownership and fandom in 2026 and beyond has a lot to do with identifying what people are familiar with.
Not everyone’s a stock market expert, but most understand its general nature. And as was the case with me, when the see the on track AND off track goings on in the horse racing industry, they can’t help but be hooked. As I was.
So if you know anyone who might like joining our growing community of horse racing fans, owners, and horsemen, tell them about HorseClaiming.com.
What’s coming in March
I’m declaring it “National Racehorse Owners Month.” Apparently there is a week devoted to it in August, but that’s across the pond in the the U.K. Its about time we had one here in the States.
I’ll be posting throughout the month of March, in small “bites,” my observations about ownership: its forms, its ups and downs, and my thoughts on how it can be enhanced in ways that welcome many more into the game we all love.
If you have any ideas for topics, or any views on the state of racehorse ownership, use our chat or contact me directly at rob@sungardeninvestment.com.
Enjoy the races!
